African airlines reports 4% rise in capacity (seats) in May-2014: AFRAA – African Airlines Association (AFRAA) reports (30-May-2014) the following capacity* data from Africa to other regions in May-2014:
African airlines: 9.4 million, +4.1% year-on-year;
Intra Africa: 7.7 million, +4.7%;
Africa-Europe: 932,630, -0.2%;
Africa-North America: 77,855, +5.9%;
Africa-Middle East: 511,043, +3.6%;
Africa-Asia: 185,023, +3.6%;
Other carriers: 3.2 million, -10.3%.
*Data is for all passenger flights, both non-stop and flights with stops
Etihad confirms Alitalia deal after months of negotiations – Etihad Airways has finalised the conditions it requires for a major investment in Italian airline Alitalia following months of negotiations. While a brief statement from Etihad releases no financial information, but in a televised interview earlier the Italian transport minister said the Abu Dhabi-based carrier was ready to invest around €600 million in the struggling Alitalia.

Protea Hotels go live on Marriott.com – Marriott International has announced that Protea’s portfolio of hotels are now available for booking on the Marriott.com website, as well as through Marriott Global Reservations Offices. Marriott recently completed the approximately US$200 million acquisition of Protea Hotels and its sub-brands, African Pride Hotels and Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! in a move that secured its position as the largest hotel operator on the African continent.
Dubai Airport to experience congestion issues by 2017/18: Emirates President – Emirates president Tim Clark said UAE’s Dubai International Airport (DIA) is likely to encounter congestion issues by 2017/2018 and called for further expansion at Dubai World Central (DWC) (The National/Wall Street Journal, 02-Jun-2014). Mr Clark said existing operational plans were based on forecast growth of 10% to 11% but traffic at Dubai International Airport increased at 14% to 16% for the last two to three years.
Thai Airways outlines deployment for new A380 and 777-300ER – Thai Airways held (29-May-2014) an anointing ceremony for one A380 and one Boeing 777-300ER. The A380 will deployed on services between Bangkok and Frankfurt, Osaka, Paris and Tokyo Narita. The 777 will be deployed on services between Bangkok and Beijing, Brisbane, Brussels, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Melbourne, Oslo, Shanghai and Singapore.
Air New Zealand announces purchase of 13 A320neo aircraft in USD1.35bn fleet refresh – Air New Zealand announced (02-Jun-2014) a NZD1.6 billion (USD1.35 billion) refresh of its international narrowbody fleet with the purchase of 13 new Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft. The exact mix of A320neo and A321neo is yet to be confirmed, but the airline says it will purchase a minimum of three A321neo aircraft. The aircraft will replace Air New Zealand’s current fleet of 13 A320s which operate the majority of the airline’s trans-Tasman and Pacific Island services. The first A321neo is due in late 2017 with the remainder of the aircraft delivered at intervals through until 2019.
