Top 10 Travel Destinations In The World for 2015

As summer 2015 chronologically kicks off in exactly a week (In 2015, the summer begins with the solstice on June 21 at 12:38 P.M. EDT), i still receive tons of questions about the top travel destinations passionate travelers can explore for an epic summer getaway. Nine out of ten times, i start with Dubai, then mention other famous cities that comes to mind like Paris, London, Madrid, Cape Town, Zanzibar, Seychelles, New York and so on. I must confess that my answers are usually largely influenced by personal experience, ease of visa procurement and most importantly, budget. Turns out my number one travel destination didn’t even make it to the top ten list of travel destinations according to a recent survey. That isn’t objective, is it?

Earlier this year, the folks at TripAdvisor came out with an objective and statistically computed list of top travel destinations for 2015. “Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions in destinations worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period. These world-class destinations chosen by our community are rich in history, culture and beauty and offer endless sights to explore,” said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor.

There you have it. Dubai, my favorite holiday city and that of most Nigerians i want to believe, didn’t make the list. I also find it surprising that none of the exotic Caribbean countries made the list and neither did any US city. Europe boasts of an envious 5 cities on the list. Cape Town and Marrakech made the list from the African continent. Marrakech, in case you didn’t know, is known as Morocco’s “Red City” because of the many walls and buildings that were built using red sandstone during the 1100s. Buenos Aires and Cape Town made their debut on the list while Chinese cities of Beijing and Shanghai lost their places.
