Emirates Airline Terminates FIFA Sponsorship Over Corruption Allegations

Emirates Airline has confirmed it will terminate its sponsorship of FIFA as an investigation into allegations of corruption at the organisation continues.

Allegations center on the voting processes for selection of the upcoming World Cup hosts, with Russia set to stage the event in 2018 and Qatar in 2022.

Emirates, considered the world’s largest international airline, confirmed earlier it would not be extending the contract that began in 2006.

That contract concludes this year.

“This decision was made following an evaluation of FIFA’s contract proposal which did not meet Emirates’ expectations,” the airline said yesterday in an e-mailed statement.

However, four of the top-tier sponsors for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil have renewed through at least the next World Cup in Russia.

Sony remains in discussions about an extension.

Adidas, Visa, Coca-Cola and Hyundai all remains top-tier sponsors of the event.

The selection of Qatar as host for the 2022 event is likely to have played a role in the decision, with reports Qatar Airways, a rival of Emirates, may be preparing to replace the carrier.

Former United States attorney Michael Garcia recently investigated the voting process for awarding hosting rights for the tournaments.

FIFA will announce the results of the inquiry this month.

However, its ethics head has said the report will not be published in full.
